This CD-ROM gives you a chance to interact with the story and cast of Buena Vista International's upcoming release, "THE ROCK", starring Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage and Ed Harris. The program plays all elements directly from the CD-ROM. To ensure that it runs properly, please read the system requirements and installation process carefully. Enjoy!
Place the CD-ROM in the drive. Its icon will appear on the screen, and a folder will automatically open with the following items:
-README - You are reading this file right now!
-QUICKTIME™ 2.1 - Contains QuickTime™ utilities, which are needed to play video elements contained on the CD-ROM. It is likely you already have QuickTime™ installed on your Macintosh. If not, open the QuickTime™ folder. You may wish to read any other informational files contained in the folder. Also included is MoviePlayer 2.1 and a sample QuickTime movie called "small sprite movie". In addition, Indeo_Mac is in the folder, but you do NOT need this utility.
To Install QuickTime™ :
1. Locate the System Folder on your hard disk. Open the System Folder by double clicking on its icon.
2. Locate the Extensions folder inside your System Folder. Open the Extensions folder by double clicking on its icon.
3. It may be easier to located files by their name. To do this, go to the menu at the top of the screen and click on VIEW, then BY NAME.
4. Remove all extensions that begin with the name "QuickTime. Drag them all to the Trash. Note: do not empty the trash until you restart your Macintosh.
5. If there is a copy of the Apple Multimedia Tuner extension in the Extensions folder, drag it to the Trash.
6. Close the Extensions folder. Close the System Folder.
7. Drag the QuickTime, QuickTime PowerPlug, and QuickTime Musical Instruments icons to your hard disk's System Folder icon (not into the open folder).
8. Click OK in the dialog box that appears.
9. Restart your Macintosh.
-SOUND MANAGER 3.1 - Contains Sound Manager utility, which is needed to play audio elements contained on the CD-ROM. It is likely you already have Sound Manager installed on your Macintosh. If not, open the Sound Manager folder. You may wish to read any other informational files contained in the folder.
To install Sound Manager:
1. Drag the Sound Manager and Sound control panel icons from the Sound Manager disk onto your System Folder icon (not into the open folder).
2. Click OK in the dialog box that appears.
3. Restart your Macintosh.
***AFTER YOU HAVE INSTALLED QUICKTIME™ AND/OR SOUND MANAGER, YOU MUST RESTART YOUR MACINTOSH.
***IF YOU RECEIVE ERROR MESSAGES INDICATING "QUICKTIME INSTALLATION FAILED", IT MEANS YOU ALREADY HAVE A COPY OF QUICKTIME INSTALLED. DRAG THE OLDER VERSION TO THE TRASH.
To locate the older versions, select (highlight) them in the Extensions folder, then select "Get Info" in the File menu. Remove all QuickTime items that do NOT say "2.1" in the version window. Restart your Macintosh after removing these files.
-THE ROCK - Double-click on this icon to begin playing the CD-ROM program. All elements are played directly from the CD.
Special notes: Be sure Virtual Memory on your Macintosh is turned OFF. To do this, from the Control Panel, select Memory. Set Virtual Memory to the OFF position, then restart your Macintosh. Also, disable any software-based memory expansion programs (such as Connectix RAM Doubler™) when running this program.
WINDOWS:
Place the CD-ROM in the drive. Before you attempt to run the program, be sure you have QuickTime for Windows installed on your hard drive -- it is required to play the multimedia elements.
If you do not already have QuickTime for Windows on your computer, you may install it from the CD-ROM by running the following program:
-For Windows 3.1, run QT16INST.EXE
-For Windows 95 and Windows NT, run QT32INST.EXE
To PLAY "THE ROCK" CD-ROM program, run one of the following versions:
-For Windows 3.1, run ROCK.EXE
-For Windows 95 and Windows NT, run ROCK95.EXE
***WHEN YOU RUN THE PROGRAM IN WINDOWS IT MAY TAKE A MINUTE OR TWO FOR THE CD-ROM TO INITIALIZE. PLEASE BE PATIENT -- THE GAME WILL BEGIN!!!
There are several ways to run programs in Windows:
-Use FILE MANAGER (in Windows 95 it's called WINDOWS EXPLORER) to open the drive on which the program resides. In this case, it would be the drive designated for your CD-ROM (usually drive D or E). A list of files will appear. Simply double-click on the file you wish to run.
-Use PROGRAM MANAGER (your main Windows menu screen). Click FILE, then RUN. In the Command Line box, type the name of the drive on which the program is located (usually D or E), followed by a colon and backslash (:\), then the name of the program (ROCK.EXE). For example:
D:\ROCK.EXE (for drive D)
E:\ROCK.EXE (for drive E)
If your CD-ROM is not D or E, use the appropriate letter.
-In Windows 95 you may also select MY COMPUTER. The name of the CD-ROM will appear. Open the CD-ROM and select the desired program name.
Special note: Disable any software-based memory expansion programs (such as RAM Doubler) when running this CD-ROM program.
This program is designed to run on as many types of systems as possible, but there may be occasional problems with incompatible hardware and/or software drivers. Refer to this section if you are experiencing any problems playing the CD-ROM program.
-OVERALL:
If you have other applications open, close as many as possible to free up system resources. You may wish to reboot (restart) your computer before running the CD-ROM. Do not run any software-based memory expansion programs (such as Connectix RAM Doubler™) when playing this CD-ROM. Macintosh users, turn off Virtual Memory as described in the installation instructions above.
-PROBLEMS WITH PICTURE:
If you are not seeing ANY video, make sure that you have QuickTime installed in your system. See QuickTime installation instructions above.
If the colors do not appear to be accurate, or in proper resolution, be sure your display is set for 256 colors.
Other problems may be due to either an unsupported video card or an older version of your video card software driver. Contact your video card manufacturer and obtain the latest version of software driver for your card and install it. If this does not work, your video card is probably not supported by the program. Every attempt has been made to support as many cards as possible, but we make no guarantee of compatibility with your system's configuration.
-PROBLEMS WITH SOUND:
Your sound card MUST be 100% Sound Blaster compatible to assure reliable playback. Remember to check all connections to speakers and check that your sound card is properly seated in an available expansion slot. Refer to your sound card documentation for additional assistance.
-PROBLEMS WITH SLOW PLAYBACK:
Please refer to the section regarding system configuration above. Your machine must meet or exceed the stated requirements for playback. Note that, due to the high processing demands of audio and video, playback may not be optimum on systems with even the minim requirements. The faster and more powerful your computer, the better the results will be.
-PROBLEMS WITH PRINTING:
Printing involves limitless combinations of printers and drivers. We are unable to guarantee that printing will work on all systems and printers. If need be, open this README files in your favorite word processor and print independently.
If you still have problems, try the following:
-Obtain the latest versions of software drivers from your video card and/or CD-ROM manufacturer.
-Install a CD-ROM caching program, which speeds up effective access time of your CD-ROM drive. There are several third-party programs available.
-Make sure you have a double-speed CD-ROM drive with a 300KB/sec transfer rate. A slower drive will not produce acceptable playback. Refer to your drive's documentation for more information.
-Free up as much system memory by closing all other windows, turn off all open applications and all of your extensions except Apple CD-ROM, QuickTime, and Sound Manager. These techniques are covered in your system manuals.
Remember to refer to your system manuals and hardware/software documentation. Usually, most problems can corrected by contacting your hardware or software manufacturer.
